PUBG Ally — AI teammate / Co-Playable Character (KRAFTON + NVIDIA ACE)

Published · Researched 2026-09-20

Status: Publicly playtested in 2026 — a global beta ran in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS' Arcade mode ("Ally Duo" on Sanhok) until July 1, 2026; availability as of September 20, 2026 UNVERIFIED. KRAFTON positions it as the "world's first in-game AI agent that joins players as a teammate." Research current as of September 20, 2026.

Overview

PUBG Ally is KRAFTON's NVIDIA ACE-powered AI teammate: a voice-conversational character that drops into a match with you, loots, fights, revives, fetches requested items, discusses strategy, and adapts its playstyle — reasoning about the battlefield rather than running scripts. KRAFTON's Head of AI, Kangwook Lee: "'PUBG Ally' can discuss strategies with players and adapt its playstyle accordingly. It can bring you requested items, assist in reviving its teammates, and make independent decisions during looting, combat, and survival situations — continuously adjusting its strategy as circumstances change."

The tech runs on-device: a Small Language Model (SLM) built with NVIDIA ACE, plus speech-to-text and text-to-speech, inferenced on the player's GeForce RTX GPU for low latency. At CES 2026 KRAFTON showed long-term memory — Ally carries a profile across matches (your name, preferred weapons, favorite drop locations, prior match records). The NVIDIA developer blog's player evidence: "One player asked Ally to look out for a Beryl in the first match, and from the next match onward Ally started finding it without being asked. Another told Ally their name once, and Ally was already using it in the next match."

In the public beta the AI character was named Ella. KRAFTON trained it the hard way: they rented out entire internet cafes, recruited over 1,000 PUBG players, and logged ~40,000 matches of real player–AI interaction, continuously deploying improved versions through the collection period.

Social standing

Strong enthusiast and press signal; the Steam community is watching closely.

  • Steam discussions (PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, app 578080): the announcement thread "AI teammates are going to be a thing." quotes NVIDIA's ACE reveal and the top sentiment is captured verbatim: "Crazy. PUBG still doesn't have DLSS but will be the first game to have large-language model teammates."
  • YouTube: NVIDIA's "Introducing PUBG Ally" trailer (~530K views, referenced in the Steam thread); independent beta tests like "PUBG's AI Buddy Can See Through Walls!" put the AI character Ella through gameplay tests — finding loot, marking enemies, throwing grenades on voice command, reviving — and sparked a fun debate about whether its game-state awareness amounts to wallhack-like advantages (the creator's own take: not hacking; "the AI requires additional game information to function effectively, and every player in Ally Duo has access to the same AI capabilities").
  • Press: Inven Global (development story, internet-cafe training), Digital Trends ("the first game to have large-language model teammates"), gamegpu, Games Press (KRAFTON's playtest announcement at the GeForce Gamer Festival in Seoul, Oct 2025).
  • NVIDIA developer blog (June 2026 Q&A): documents the memory system and player reactions — the Beryl/name examples above.

Tone is overwhelmingly "this is the future arriving" with a side of competitive-fairness anxiety. No abandonment/complaint signal — but no ongoing-user community either, since it was a limited beta.

Pricing (as reported, dated)

Observed September 20, 2026:

  • Free within PUBG — PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is free-to-play and the Ally beta ran inside its Arcade mode at no separate charge and with no reported usage caps.
  • Hardware gate: on-device SLM requires an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU (a real cost for AMD/non-RTX players).
  • Current availability: the global beta ended July 1, 2026; whether Ally has rolled out wider is UNVERIFIED.

Support reality

  • First-party, R&D-grade: KRAFTON's AI org plus NVIDIA — 1,000+ player training program, iterative deployment, language-expert review of quality/naturalness across three languages.
  • The open question is shipping: as of Sept 2026 there is no confirmed permanent/wide release. It reads as an extended public experiment on the road to a launch — support exists for the beta cohort, not for a live service.
  • No monetization, no support-ticket drama found — because there was nothing to buy or break yet.

Community verdict

The most technically serious companion in this round: a voice-conversing, memory-holding, battlefield-reasoning AI teammate that real players tested at scale (40,000 matches). It's less a "companion" in the emotional sense than a colleague — the fantasy is a squadmate who remembers you. The verdict is pending on the only question that matters: does it ship beyond the beta? Until KRAFTON commits, it's a brilliant public prototype with a hardware gate.
